Oil Pressure suddenly cuts out to 0, engine makes tapping noise

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

196,000 miles.  The oil pressure suddenly drops out, usually while at idle, and it
makes tapping noise.  Then, just as quickly, it pops back up to normal and all is fine.
Giving it some gas seems to be the "fix".  The idle rpm is normal when it happens.  It
lasts a few seconds, maybe 20 or 30 at most.  It would appear to be that the pressure
is actually cutting out completely and then somehow fixing itself.  I can't understand
what would cause it to just shut off pressure and then just as fast come back.

I was thinking, maybe the oil level is falling and the pickup tube is sucking air, but how would increasing rpm fix that? And the low level light does work and it is not on.

First, check your oil. If that's fine then you have a mechanical issue. Best case is you just need an oil pump
