Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Hi,
My 2004 explorer started making a grinding noise randomly when I accelerate. no change when I brake or turn, shifts fine engine is fine. if it happens and I let off the gas sound stops, if I slightly accelerate ( say under 2 rpm) still no sound. took off tires, no rub marks and brakes look good. I'm lost, if it happens when I leave for work it will continue the entire ride. after work, heading home does nothing.

Possibly the power steering pump, but hard to tell. Will it grind at a dead stop, in park, while reving the engine and turning the wheel from side to side?

We just had our 3rd AWD Explorer lunch the front differential's carrier bearings. Seems to be a pattern. For giggles, climb under the front and see if you can force either or both half-shafts from side to side. If so, plan on spending some money. If you use a salvage part, take the Tag numbers (or the tag) with you. There are 2 different diffs and they do not interchange.
