What does it mean when the light for maintenance required is on?

Whenever I turn on my car a light on that dashboard lights up and says that maintenance required. What I am wondering is what kind of maintenance is it talking about?

scheduled mileage intervals trigger the light. and sometimes the light just means what it says. 'maintenance is required'
