1999 Saab 9-3 convertiible top clicks and does not work

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 1999 Saab 9-3 convertible and the top randomly stopped working one day. The trunk was packed full so I'm not sure if that had anything to do with it, but it was working fine for a couple of years even with the trunk full. Now, it starts to go up, but then starts clicking. The dealership said it needs a whole new system that will cost $3000, but that just seems ridiculous especially since it was working yesterday. Someone said it may be the pump and I could take it out and have it rebuilt. Any other ideas? Thanks.

This could be an easy fix if you are lucky. 1. You should try to change the Fuse in the fuse box, it might been blown. 2. Some part of the folding system on the Hat itself might have become out of position, so check the supportbeams. Also check in the hat-room and see if there is anything that can indicate that it's hold back by any of the cars steel. This is the things you can try first :) If it dosent lead anywhere, you might have to change the elctric motor.

I have the same problem every spring. I have a small, undetetable (as of yet) leak in the hydraulic system so every spring I lower the back of the rear seat, expose the hydrulic pump, and add a small amount of "GM Hydrulic fluid" specifically made for this application. The fluid isn't cheap and I haven't researched if there is a less expensive "generic" version yet. The whole process takes me about 3/4 of an hour, start to finish. Consdiering I'm probably looking at a thousand dollar dealer "hunt and peck" servicing it was worth the cost of the fluid.

If the fluid isn't low then it is the electric pump. Remove the pump and take it to a company that specializes in these type of pump repair. Then take it to a company that has experience in replacing these types of pumps. Stay away from the dealer if at all possible.
