VATS.Passkey 1, 2, 3. Criminal that GM used this system for so many years. It has disabled many otherwise solid vehicles. Just google "VATS, PASSkey bypass"

I have a similar problem with my 1994 olds 88. It does not die once started though. Might that sensor also be the reason my check engine light comes on from time to time?

If the security light flashing on instrument panel, look for the VATS bypass fix. If your check engine light came on, whether it stayed on or not, have it scanned. Whatever the code,Thats prob the root cause.
