We have an Autodata scanner and we used it on a 1997 Buick Century and got the code "401" Does anyone know what this means?

That should be an EGR inefficiency code. Sometimes the passage between the EGR and intake becomes clogged, and that is usually the cause for the code. The operation of the EGR valve should be checked as well.
