Make sure your fluid level us correct. A transmission may not pull the vehicle when u hit the gas. Engine will rev but wont move. Grinding noises are possible. Missing gears. If the transmission pan is taken off you can see chunks of matierial in the bottom as evidence of failure

List off some symptoms so we can better help you. Slamming in reverse and other gears indicates your valve body needs replacing. a large hole in the side of the trans means you've been visited by the diff pin fairy.
