I have a Saturn SL2 1.4 1998 - Replaced starter now won't start Why?? Please.

I have a Saturn SL2 1.4 1998 - It initially started being difficult to start like would rev real
slow to fast and then start. Got worse. Started getting worse then eventually no turn over.
Replaced starter now just a Click and nothing why???

Have you tested the battery? Good place to start?
