I have a 1996 chevy lumina ls with a 3.1 v6 motor can i take it out a put a 3.4 v6 motor in? will it be compatible?

I believe that they are the same physical size. If you are stepping up for power, you won't be gaining much.

What year is the donor motor. As long as it's a 3400 (LA1 FWD motor), it will fit. The 3.4 DOHC (LQ1) would need some modifications. The 3400 is a bored out version of the 3100 so everything should be identical. (FYI 3.1 refers to the older pre '94 engines). The L32 is a 3.4 RWD motor and wont work (Camaro/Firebird).
