I own a 97 caviler 2.2l and it has a blown cylinder head between number 1 and 2 cylinders and I was wondering what years are interchangeable can someone help?

The 95-2000 is the same 2.2. 2001 the ecotec 2.2 came out. I don't think that will work as a direct replacement. It will fit but require a bit of work.

a auto parts store told me that the 01 won't match up but the 02 will I just can afford $400 for a new head cylnider

That doesn't make any sense. Your 2.2 was replaced by the Ecotec 2.2 in 2001. Try a different parts store. I would remove the head on your car send it to your local engine machine shop have it boiled, magnaflexed and plained, if the heads not cracked you can reuse it. Should run about $100-$200 to have it done.
