sounds like the throw out bearing. is it a whiny kind of whirring sound? does it stop with the clutch in?

No it doesn't stop with the clutch in I tried to find a drive-train diagram to see if I could follow it back with a laser thermometer to see if something is getting hot but every diagram I found ends up to blurry to read this is the first all wheel drive ive had and love the car but it might be the last AWD I buy. I talk to 2 mechanics both said it might be a faulty bearing I know its not as it runs 1 degree cooler than the other ones if it was bad it would heat up has anyone seen a site with a good drive-train diagram

ok. Well here's what you do. Log on to Facebook and look for groups Volvo groups or forums there are people buying and selling cars and parts and people that are more than willing to help you diagnose the problem to know a lot more about them than I do. I Drive a 1988 Chrysler conquest and there's not another one for miles and miles where I live and you can't find parts for them. That's how I get my parts and all my mechanical advice. I hope it works good luck

2010 S40 Manual - noise #1 11-26-2014 08:59 AM by CCP Hi - New here thought maye I could get some ideas. S40 2.5i manual 70K miles. It just started making a noise that sounds like a bearing starting to fail. Not constant but on and off. I put it up on the jack stands and put it in gear and it sounds like its coming from the CV joint where it connects with the transmission. Not having an extra car, I brought it to a local shop who said he thinks its the tranny. Anybody have any similar issues? Manual trans with 70K miles ?? not good. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Reply #2 11-26-2014 09:01 AM by CCP Also, coasted down the block and killed the motor in neutral - noise is still there. Reply #3 11-27-2014 07:39 AM by Hudini Did the local shop quote you some insane price to fix it for you? I'd watch out for them. You can swap a half shaft pretty quick in these cars.

07 S40 2.4i Manual 151,000km I've got a whirring noise on 2nd, 3rd and 4th. 5th is ok. Shifts and drives just fine. No noise when rolling. My mechanic says the main tranny bearing is deteriorating and it's gonna be downhill from here. He charges me good rate but the car is hail damaged and I don't see much point to invest in it. Any ideas how long can the tranny last with such faulty bearing?
