I have an 87 740 turbo gle and we had to fill up like 6 times driving from Houston to Missouri. My dad says it gets about 15 mpg

I have a '89 740 Turbo Wagon. We've made some updates and tweeks but, I'd say we get about 22 mph HWY on a good day.

Volvo is not know for it's fuel economy. :P
But they are very good cars to drive. :)
Our 740 GLE uses about 0,7 litres on 1mil (10KM)
And that's on nice driving.
If I use it to go crazy, it uses 1.0 L :P

Around town in my 85 740 turbo i get about 17 driving to have fun (Basically i don't drive nicely). On the highway i average around 25
but have gotten over 28 out of the car. I have the manual which helps though.

I have a 87 740 wagon with the 2.4 liter 4 cylinder (about 110HP). The car is not in good shape so I was surprised that it only averaged at about 9.7l/100km (=24 mpg) on my trip from Germany to Hungary. I've been told by the previous owner that he got it down to 8.5 l/100km (=27.7 mpg) but that was about 5 years ago, so the car wasn't as run down yet.

I've had ten 740's and a healthy GL (B230F) uses abut 0,9-1 liter/10 km

driving a decently maintained 85 740 turbo wagon. i beat on it pretty often though(full throttle clutch drops, fourth to third kick downs yada abuse yada) and it still gets a good 16 to 21 mpg, its thirsty when first started but once it warms up 19/20 is about the norm

What color is your 85? 85's are rare, manual 740s are even rarer
