Battery? Or the battery charging system needs to be checked. If everything brightens up when a starter battery is connected it indicates a low battery. You may have dirty or poor cable connections or the alternator is not putting out as it should. The battery may have a bad cell which will not hold a charge and not allow enough power in the battery to turn over the engine.
