Find a VW forum and ask the people that have done it. You should check in a couple of places so you don't end up with a engine you can't use.

Probably the 1998 engine has the intake made of aluminum if this is correct, it is an earlier version of the engine. It cn be installed but the correct engine was installed after after 1999.
