Question type: Maintenance & Repair

i have a 2005 dodge ram that started to make a clanking noise when i put it in or out of gear.As far as the transmission goes it is not slipping at all.Took it to the shop and they stated they wouldnt even do anything if they were for sure that it wasnt doing damage to anything, stated theyve done research over the net and have never experienced this problem that it was weird. Want 300.00 to pull apart just to look at it for starters. can anyone please help, i need this truck for work, im a contractor by trade and use it everyday to haul my tools. Really getting scared to drive it but it shifts fine.

Chuck, from the way you make it sound, it sounds like theirs too much pinion backlash in the rear end. crawl under the truck and look at the rear end, right where the ujoint at the pinion flange is, if you can see gear fluid leaking from that area you have a bad pinion bearing, which can cause your clunking in and out of gear. No matter what id say the problem is more than likely with the rearend of the truck.

While you're down there check the universal joints too. Loose U-Joints can cause the same sound and will also cause vibrations when driving at highway speeds. Look for play in the joints or obvious signs of rusty coloration around the rubber seals.

well dan bad news, after investigating further the noise is coming from the parking paw on the side of the transmission. do you know if this can be fixed without tearing out the tranny? the parking paw is on the side so you may be able to get to it from dropping the pan, not sure. helpppp?? lol
