can't seem to find a repair manual for a 1996 tercel can you use the one for a 1994. Mine is setting erg code po401.

You can, but it won't tell you what the code is, since pre-1996 cars did not use OBD-II diagnostic protocols, which is the code you are describing.

ther where a lot of significant change from 94 to 95 so i would try and find ahaynes or chilton man for 95-99
