Most of the time, the temperature guage shows normal temperature. Then, for no apparent reason, the guage rises into the red zone.The thermistat is new. What could cause intermittrent overheating.

Does the overheating have any correlation with highway, 65mph driving and stop-and-go traffic? Mileage? And has it ever had a water pump changed? What does the coolant look like? Dark red? I know, full of questions but that information will help me try to figure this out
