1995 Legacy Air Conditioning

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 1995 Legacy with air conditioning.  The clutch in the compressor continues to seize up, breaking the belt.  If I do not use the air conditioning, do I still need to replace belt (i.e., repair compressor clutch)?  Is the car safe to drive without the belt?  Thanks for any help given.

If the belt is only connecting the crank pulley to the A/C then, you will be fine driving it without the belt. If however, the belt is connected to another accessory pulley in addition to the A/C (e.g. the power steering pulley or the alternator) then, you will need to replace it and the A/C compressor. It may be seizing due to not enough oil in the A/C lines.

Thanks for your help, Noah. The compressor is only for A/C - since I live in Alaska, I don't need it. I also detached the electrical wiring from the compressor clutch, so it free flows now. Appreciate your time.
