Yes there is, a "C" clip inside the trany, Look on the new drive axle end and there should be a "C" clip on it, this should be on the passenger side, if replacing the driver side, there is still a "C" clip but would not be on the new shaft, because there is a stub shaft that would have to be transferred to the new shaft. It comes out with the axle when pulling it out. To remove drive axles, need to just apply pressure to pull out. Do Not pull on the shaft itself if you are trying to save it, as you will pull the assembly apart and tear the boot. Pressure needs to be applied to the inboard housing of the CV joint. Support the shaft as it comes out, never let it hang if trying to save, Never let the new one hang also as it could come apart inside the boot on the inboard side.
You may find a pry bar with a screwdriver type handle useful. Similar to the ones in the link.....http://www.bestbuyautoequipment.com/sunex-tools-9704- 4pc-pry-bar-set-p/sun9704-03.htm
