if you do not have a digital speedodometer, you would have a mechanal one speed omoter cable is probley dry, causing the clicking sound as it turns inside the cable.

You have an electronically controlled speedometer. No cable exists. If it does it while you air conditioning or heating is on, it is most likely the motor that controls the flap that controls how much heat gets into the passenger compartment. I had a similiar problem with my grand prix I owned. It eventually went out and all I had was heat. That sucked. Not an expensive part, but very time consuming to put it in. Also I would recommend ensuring that it is coming from under the dash and not from under the hood.

the hazard flasher,is the problem

Yep, it's the hazard flasher. I've replaced quite a few of 'em. It is actually located in the hazard button itself. It's a whole assembly, and it's a dealer only item. You'll have to get it from your local GM dealer. The good news is, it is easy to replace.

Thanks for all your input, I now know a few things to look for and yes I am sure its coming from the dash, it only happens when i have just made a turn and the signal goes off, it clicks five or six times then stops. The noise just drives me mad.

yes it is the hazzard flasher, i work for a gm dealer and that is the most common reason for the problem. not sure if there is a recall or not on yours can't remember if they made one for the hazzard. Bring it to a shop and ask them if it is covered.

There is a recall on the Hazard switch, get it done or it will burn out your signal switch assembly on the steering column, and that is expensive. Mine did it. I ignored the switch, eventually replaced it 9.00 part too lazy to go to the dlrshp. but it had already damaged it. Lucky me my hubby can do the labor, but the part was over 100.00 bucls

other sources say a dirty turn signal switch at the steering wheel causes this. "To remedy he problem remove two tork screws bottom of steering column. Leave the center one alone. Remove top cover to steering column. Remove center top tork screw to remove turn signal assembly. unplug the 3 wire harnesses. Now clean all the outside contacts with a Q-tip and alcohol removing the grease between all the contact grooves. Reassemble"

VERY HELPFUL INFO: IF IT IS NOT THE HAZARD SWITCH - (WHICH IT IS 90% OF THE TIME) - THE ISSUE IS THE WIPER / BLINKER SWITCH IN THE STEERING COLUMN. "it clicks really fast compared to when the signal is actually on" - THIS IS THE CASE HERE... 1. REMOVE THE PLASTIC COVERS FROM AROUND STEERING COLUMN 2. UNCLIP WIRE HARNESSES THAT PLUG INTO WIPER/BLINKER UNIT 3. REMOVE UNIT FROM COLUMN - FEW SCREWS 4. EITHER REPLACE OR REPAIR UNIT TO REPAIR UNIT, YOU MUST OPEN THE BLINKER SIDE AND CLEAN THE METAL CONTACTS THAT ARE IN THERE. 90% OF THE TIME THE CONTACTS HAVE LOTS OF METALLIC RESIDUE AND BUILD UP ON THEM. THIS CAUSES THE BLINKER CONTACTS TO BLINK UNCONTROLLABLY WHEN YOU HIT BUMPS, OR USES THE SIGNALS. THANKYOU.

Have same problem with "clicking" noise in my '03 Grand Am. Replaced the hazard switch, but clicking noise is still happening! What else could be the cause?

I to have had this start clicking in my wifes car, she has a 04 grand Am, very random and clicks at different speeds, I took the center assembly off and found that the flasher is all one assembly, (how dumb is that??? leave it to pontiac) I took it to the auto parts store and they had a replacement at $18, only when I put it in it still clicked,, so I took it back, they ordered me another one,, tried it today, and it still clicks.. I know it is this flasher because I can "feel" it click on it's own AND when I use the turn signal.. was told that the clicking is due to the flasher going bad, seems that is not the case,,SOOOOO what else can I check to fix this?

you have a problem with what is called a blend door.it is something to do with the air cond/heat,and how it blows out of the vents, defroster, floor etc.

i had the exact same problem with oune of my grand ams, i tried to replace the blinker module but that wasn't the problem. i fixed it by opening up the casing around the steering column and replacing the multi function controls ( the one piece turn signal/headlights/wipers assembly). problem went away immediately. hope this helps!

Clean the electrical connections to your wiper/turnsignal module located inside the steering column.

it is your multifunction switch. I.e. your blinker / wiper switch is bad or contacts are dirty as explained before

My 2004 Pontiac Grand Am GT has been making the maddening, blinker like noise for almost a year. Paniced and trying not to have to spend a fortune but keep hearing tales of extensive labor costs. What is the general concensus on where to start first to eliminate multiple repairs?

I have a '04 Grand Am that I purchased in 2007. I have the same problem with the constant ticking even when the blinker is not in use. I have replaced the hazard switch twice.."no fix yet".. I have taken it to the GM dealer and they "blow me off" as if I have no clue to what Im talking about and tell me its nothing. I have the poofy smoke also only a couple times though, worried for fire now. Help, thinking its the blinker switch to...how do u replace ?

My 2005 Pontiac grand am has been clicking for a year. Then today it started smoking when I start the car. I opened the top of steering column and unplugged the turn signal plug. And it all stopped. What could cause it to smoke?

My 2000 Grand Am GT has had this recent clicking noise and it is so bothersome. It's been acting up for nearly two months and I thought it was an electrical issue. It all started one day when I turned on my hazards and I noticed what sound persisted of a 'signal on' sound but no signal turn was on. What is the issue? Is it what everyone keeps mentioning in this post? What's the cost and where can it be repaired?

it's the turn signal switch, jiggle the handle a little bit & it stops.

i had the same problem and found it was my remote starter causing the problem. if you have an after market remote starter take it back where it was installed and let them know of the problem.

It's most likely the hazard switch. Mine would clikc randomly and sometimes not work at all. I bought the hazard switch for $18 and put it in. Mechanic told me that it wouldn't fix the problem and was trying to charge $120 for something else. lol. i fixed it myself. Pop out the panel where your radio and stuff is out. unplug old one. plug in new one. pop panel back on. done!

There is a known problem on a few GM vehicles (unsure if this is one) where the blinker knob would wear and short power to the hazard flasher. No lights would blink but at random times the flasher would click like crazy or rythmically. Pretty much had a mind of it's own.

We had the same problem, the clicking sound in our case did indeed come from the hazard switch in the dash, yet the problem was coming from the multi-function turn signal switch on the steering column. I took the assembly apart and you could see obvious sign of arcing between the contacts. I took a fingernail file and filed the brass contacts to make a slightly wider gap between the contacts in the area of the arcing. This completely fixed the problem and only cost me a hour or so of my time. The other solution if indeed you are experiencing the same problem is to buy and replace the multi-function switch. You can get one from e-bay pretty reasonable. But the blinker noise is coming from the hazard switch in the center of the dash and this is misleading. So the hazard switch must serve as the "noise" for both the hazard flashers and the turn signals. I hope this helps!

first of all make sure there is not a recall related to your vehicle id number. there is a recall related to this. second when you hear he clicking very very gently move your turn signal switch and the cilicking should stop as long as you dont move the lever far enough to engage the turn signal. I will stress again that the movement of the turn signal is very slight. once you verify this then purchase a multifunction switch from the parts house and install. Its pretty simple but you may find that the aftermarket unit doesnt have the same smooth feel as you engage the signal left or right but it will function just fine

@Phill800: in our 04 Pontiac Grand Am it was quite simple fix. There was a you tube video. The blinker mechanism just needed to be cleaned. It was the most irritating noise ever! But me and the hubs watched the videotwice and had it really avail when taking blinker handle off. Took it off cleaned it with a q tip and put it back on. Half hour. I am sorry I don't remember the name of the you tube video. I think if you search Grand Am blinker you may find it. Good luck!

im sure your getting a lot of different answers but the real problem is they had a recall on the hazard switch because they could get moisture and corrosion I went to junkyard popped out 1 without a factory sticker that's how you determine it had been replaced believe recalled part was made overseas I have a 2001 grand am the recall was I believe 99-03 never had a problem again so that's the real problem
