What are the pros and cons of bypassing the air/smog pump on a 2000 pontiac Grand Am Gt?

The air pump seized up on my grand am and the serpentine belt broke the other day, would like to know what are
the pros and cons of bypassing it and exactly how do you do it?

there is no smog pump on a 2000 pontiac . are you sure it's not the water pump? what size engine is it?
