My service engine soon light is on. Is it a sensor?

Asked by Janvier7 Feb 04, 2015 at 12:44 PM about the 1999 Mitsubishi Montero Sport 4 Dr Limited 4WD SUV

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Car is 16 years old and is now starting to hesitate upon acceleration.

We need to differentiate between the CEL, check Engine Light, and 'Service engine soon'. The latter is an oil change reminder.. When a sensor fails the CEL will light. But if it has not had things like spark plugs, air filter, for a long time it might just be that.
