1998 Grand Cherokee overdrive whines

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My 4.0 Grand Cherokee with 144,000 mile makes a whining sound when it shifts into overdrive. If I push the OD button to turn off the overdrive the noise stops or if I let off the gas it seems to stop also. I thought it was a differential at first but it seems to be isolated to the OD.
Any ideas?

Sounds like the front pump on the transmission is cavitating, or sucking air, because the transmission filter has become clogged. Try having the transmission fluid and filter changed and I think you will solve the problem.

Thanks a lot, I'll give that a try and let you know what happens. Do you recommend using a synthetic fluid?

I just had a transmission replaced on my 97 " JEEP LAREDO..all new fluid, filter, ect..my jeep is doing the very same thing. It is a used tranny, not brand new...and its not the transfer case( I just had that checked today ) I am thinking TORQUE CONVERTER ?

I have similar whine noise in my 2008 Jeep WK GC with 545RFE auto trans. Whine noise once transmission goes into overdrive in 5th or top D gear. Goes away if I downshift to 4th gear or push Tow/Haul button. It seems to be the Overdrive unit, torque converter or front oil pump of trans. Any advice is very helpful to this frustrating problem. thanks
