been wired that way from the beginning. Battery light came own, battery volt gage started going down. Draining battery

Sounds like a short to ground in one or both of the wires leading to the starter. Trace the wires from the starter all the way up to the fuse box and battery. Check for any bare spots on the wires, corrosion or loose connections.

check the heavy about 1/4 inch round red wire from the alternator if it go's to the starter , if so the alt may be shorted and feed back
