04 Taurus should be getting mpg with only 25,000 miles

04 with 25,000 miles only gets 14.5 mpg.  Could it be fuel filter or air filter needs replacing or PCV valve

Hi gocarole,

I would replace the air filter, fuel filter and PCV valve.  As well as use some fuel injector cleaner (Lucas Products) into the fuel tank.

Good luck!

Thank you! I bought the first two..and if that does not work I will purchase the PCV valve.

Is there anything special about removing the Taurus fuel filter?  I have changed this type on Tempos, Escorts, Aerostars, Windstars but the white clips seem different.  Thanks.

yes you need a special tool to "release" the clips, you can get the tool at most auto parts stores

You should check around to see if there are any recalls in regards to your poor fuel economy .
Sometimes it can be a faulty sensor , and or a computer out of proper calibration .
Even stepping up to the next grade in fuel can help ( but it is a little more expensive ) The computer can adapt to the higher octane and produce better fuel economy .
Remember , the EPA standards are done in the lab and reflect  fuel economy in ideal conditions . So you should expect poor fuel economy , in comparing to EPA results .
The same goes with a low mileage motor , it tends to use a little more fuel , before it is broken in .
Making sure you change oil at proper intervals helps in fuel economy too ( synthetic is best for better gas mileage , and can be changed at longer intervals )
