Last night, power steering and brakes went out and battery light came on. Could this be the alternator?

Last night, after brief stop, smelled something hot and then the power steering and power brakes went out and battery light came on. Lights still worked fine, as well as engine and transmission. Could it be the alternator going out? I have a turbo diesel.

I would check your fan belt (serpintine). When your engine is running, it "drives" everything. If it lets go, you will have all the syptoms you have described. your lights, engine will continue to work because they are working off of the battery. hope this helps.
