smooth,,,have small rust hole in muffler

no rust hole in muffler will not.
stamdame is right, to read up on the P0420 go to http://www.obd-codes.com/p0420
its the catalytic converter, make sure you replace the right one . Some cars have 3 cats

have read above code site,,,,,,that's where muffler leak idea came from,,,,truck had been recently tuned,,,,plug wire broke causing initial engine light,,,,,,reset ,,,,now showing P0420 but running smooth even under load only visible problem is inch by inch hole at rear of muffler before tailpipe exit
its impossible for hole in muffler to cause code. Theres nothing monitoring it. you could actually remove it and it wouldnt matter.
