2005 Malibu Maxx setting dome lights to come on when door is opened?

I just purchase this car and it is driving me nuts because I can't find the ignition in the dark.  I did what the book said but it doesn't seem to be working, "turn on car, turn headlights on then off".  I don't have any remote lock fobs.  I can push on the lens cover and the light will come on, so I don't think it is the bulb.
