Hi Kathy! Big question ... The BMW 7 series dates back to 1977 spanning 4 generations of cars. From 1977 to 1986 BMW offered these models: 725i, 728, 728i/iS, 730, 730i, 732i, 733i, 735i, 745i Turbo and L7 ... Only the 733i, 735i, and L7 were available in America ... After 1987 they offered the 730, 735, and 750 as the 3.0, 3.5, and 5.0L models and each could be have in a "stretched version with an L designation. That generation lasted until 2001 when the current generation of 7-series cars were released ... The model numbers still designate engine size with the 740 being a 3.9L engine. By the way that engine is a diesel engine (should be noted as a 740d) available only in Europe as far as I can tell. The 750 is a 4.8L engine and sold in America. Hope that helps!
