I have a 2000 honda passport that will only take first gear what would cause this

It takes first gear fine. It will not try to
change to second until about 40mph
then it kicks out of gear

uh oh- check the tranny fluid- top up if necessary- this is done with the engine running and the fluid warm- be careful- it is dangerous under the hood with the engine running- if you have plenty of fluid in there, then we both must fear the worst
