in the past i have wetsanded s/s wheels carefully and brought damaged wheels back to decent shape. i am not familiar with aluminum. i have polished them with mothers power ball and good polish, but they have a mottled, oxidized look. much better than before, but can i get more agressive and get them to shine without causing damage. thanks

They can be polished just like the clearcoat on your paint finish - and with the same products. Obviously, this will diminish the thickness of the clearcoat but it brings them back to like new condition if you can efectively polish all the small surfaces. Best to do this off the car on a table that allows you to re-position the wheel as you go.

that's what i needed to know, they are clearcoated. unfortunately mine are original 21 yr. old wheels and the clear is almost gone so when i polished them i got the mottled look i described. i guess i will be looking for some original wheels in better shape or that have been refurbished. the body is mint, just compounded it with d/a and polished it so it makes the wheels look worse, not terrible, but i would like to see the car completely brought back to how it looked in 1990. gives me something to do, a hunt for parts is always fun unless you need them to get your ride running.
