can you help me to understand what kind of transmission my 1981 4 speed dasher has, i am trying to u

i have been chatting with some one who specializes on vw 020 transmissions, in regard to a problem with my 1981 vw dasher.  i know the 020 is a 5 speed and that the maybe the differential is some how incorporated in a way differently from the 1981 dasher 4 speed.  do you think a problem with the differential or trans. could cause a shimmy in the steering wheel? as a result from the torque being split strangely. there is variance in the shimmy and it does correct itself at higher speeds...so far it is seeming like it is not tires, suspension, wheel related!! what is going on?

Agreed, possibly a u-joint problem.  Is the Dasher FWD?  You might also have a problem with one of your CV driveshafts or even a bearing issue.  What have you done to eliminate tires, suspension, and the steering system as a possibility?
