Sometimes, especially if you are parked on a hill with the wheels turned one way or another, there is to much pressure on the transmission from the weight of the car. If you turn the steering wheel at the same time you move the gear shift it might release. This could happen with any automatic car. It may sound a bit strange, but it has happened to me more than once.

And of course like with all cars the brake pedal must be pressed when shifting.

If pressing the brake pedal does not make a small 'clunk' sound in under the shifter [thus releasing the shifter], then something is broken. Car does not have to be running, but the key must be on.

Kassandra, there is a very small hole near the shifter. Take a small screwdriver and push down on the spring loaded button inside the hole at the same time shift out of park. You should be fine until you put it back to park.
