Sounds like a bad vehicle speed sensor. This sensor is on the transmission. It sends a signal to the computer to properly position the needle on your speedometer. If it fails it will set a trouble code & your "check engine" light will come on. It will also cause your speedometer to be erratic or not work at all. HTH. -Jim
