i had to break my steering column open to start my 89 f150 now ineed to know why it will not shift gears

You broke it open, let me guess, with a hammer and screwdriver, punched ignition, now you have to ask?

It takes all of about five minutes to change an ignition switch, especially if there is no computer chip in the key and you decided to take a maul to it. OK, keep banging away until until it works. Cannot believe you took a maul to a 25 year old vehicle. Hope is was junk before.

Well I do have a $200 Actron CP 9580A OBDII scanner, but I don't keep it in toolbox. It makes a good wheel chock.

Yep FordNut. If one cannot get if off with an 18 lb sledge hammer, don't force it.
