we bought 4 brand new tires 6 months ago, we have 2 we need to replace due to nails. The tire place refused to put on two new tires stating the difference in wear would ruin our transmission. they also stated we needed 4 new because the tread was at 50%. We have a lifetime guarantee, so they were "generous" stating they would buy the tires back at 20 dollars each (this is the same company we bought the 600 dollar tires from originally). are we being ripped off?

Yes, the only thing that will cause trans damage is running, for example, a p215 on the front and a p235 on the rear or any different "p" size from front to rear. tire tread depth is not enough to affect the transmission.
