Looking for New Car Ideas

I just totaled my car. It was a 2002 Kia Rio, I got it for free so I took it. I was T-Boned and my frame was bent past rapairablility. I am now looking for another car. We are looking to spend somewhere between $3,000-$6,000 but not on any particular make or model. I was wondering what are some good options that are safe,cheap, but not a lemon or piece of crap.
