This just happened to my husband. 2002 540 with low mileage--about 65k. Car is totaled. Firefighters said it was electrical. We have had electrical probs with that care since about 30 seconds after the warranty expired. I'm pushing for anything BUT a BMW.

I am hoping they are talking about a year 2002 and not a BMW model 2002! If a model 2002 then there are a few obvious starting points like the fellow above. My '88 is charred under the rear seat where something got out of hand in the modules back there. Luckily it made it to the dark side and back to life.
