chevrolet cavalier 97 have a problem when i drive my car the batt light on and the car stop after 15mns smell something burn i change the alternator same thing

Check the idler pulley. It might be seized up causing the belt to act funny. Also check the belt and belt tension, typically when a idler pulley seizes it will damage the belt. Hope this helps.
