Honda Odyssey Malfunction Indicator Light

Asked by Luli Jul 20, 2011 at 10:02 PM about the 2008 Honda Odyssey

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

For the second in two months the malfunction indicator light in my 2008 Honda
Odyssey (45,000 miles) has flashed on while I was on the highway. In both
instances the car began to lose power and jerked as I tried to accelerate.  The
first time I had the car towed to the dealership where they told me that they
could find nothing wrong with it and that it was "probably bad gas/water in the
gas line".  Today, the same thing happened and I was able to pull over and when
I restarted the car it drove fine until I could make it into work.  The car is
currently at the dealership.  Anybody have any idea what the problem is?  I am
worried that again they will send me on my way, meanwhile I am scared to death
to drive this car--given my 2 past experiences.  Nothing scarier than being on a
crowded highway when your car begins to lose power!

did the light flash on and continue to flash? or did it come on and stay on?

It flashed on and off. When I restarted the car it was no longer on.

do you know if they checked for engine codes? usually when the MIL light flashes it will give a code and store it. the dealer can read the codes, but usually charge a lot. or you could go to autozone or advanced auto and have them check for codes for free.

They tell me that no code was indicated. Don't know if this is because the light flashed on and off and thus didn't "register" anything. They told me the same thing the first time around. I have an extended warranty on the car so am not particularly concerned about cost. They decided to replace some sort of valve (can't remember the name--EGR?) because it was clogged. In addition, I pulled up some stuff that I found on the internet about other people having similar problems and even a recall back in 2003 after some owners experienced a similar problem as I described. Hope this solves the problem. If anyone has any other ideas of the problem or have experienced the same thing, please let me know as I am not totally convinced that they found the "cause" of the problem--thinking they just wanted to fix something in order to get me to shut up!
