How do I get a leaking water pump loose?
Question type: Maintenance & Repair
Help? I have removed the timing belt and 3 bolts that retain the water pump but can not get it to come out. Any ideas? Any tricks? Surely this is not the first leaking water pump! i have tapped it hard and sprayed CRC liberally and even removed the hose to tap on the inside of it. It is fused solid. Do I have to pull the engine to do this thing properly???

their should be mor than 3 bolts on WP feel around bottom for more,if not knock it off-be careful doing this.

Thanks for the suggestion. Had another good look. No more bolts....just the three. I had been hitting it with a small hammer and wrecking bar but decided the best way to go is if all else fails to use a larger hammer so I used a 6 lb hammer! Managed to knock the shaft and pulley off but worried about knocking off part of the engine block!!

you just unbolted thr fan shaft, their are 9 more bolts to take out,the part where you knocked the shaft out of has to come off to,part of the water pump should be aluinmun, remove that. and reinstall new pump, first clean all gasket off of block

Yes the water pump is aluminium. The shaft through it is steel with a bearing center and the gear pump at the back with the timing belt pulley at the front. That is the bit that broke off already. The aluminium pump fits into the steel block and is retained by the three bolts. I am sure it is supposed to be loose fitting and even rotate in there but this one is very very seized. Wondering how to remove it.

Yes there were only three. Have you removed this sort of water pump? I think it was designed in Belgium where the car was made!! I see my replacement water pump is Made in Japan!!!

i work as a vauxhall mechanic is ur car a 1.4 8valve or 1.4 14valve either way it shouldn't matter and yes they do get siezed in pretty solid the best thing to do is spray loads of wd40 around it and leave for a few mins and what is left of the water pump continuely tap at it from above both sides and underneather just to try and loosen it then get a big long flat bladed screwdriver and rest on a firm point on wht is left of the water pump and give 3 light taps with the hammer and then 1 heavy smack and it sholud drop out however i have seen them actually crack the block which will then need a engine so careful where u hit it dom
