my car when I went to put in reverse and back up it did but when I slid it up to drive it was still reversing....its automatic...you can slide the shifter into all gears but it glides like its not catching..

Your 1999 Cavalier uses a cable from the shifter to transmission. It probably broke off one end or the other. This is listed specifically 1999 Caviler
