What would cause 02 sensors to fail?
Question type: Maintenance & Repair
My 2007 Sonata has 42,000 miles and I've had two 02 sensors fail in the last 2 weeks. Warranty expired
last month and each sensor cost $275. I feel the sensors must be defective, but the dealership says
they aren't, and in fact, the other sensors may fail too. What would cause this to happen?

The sensor itself might possible not have failed but something else contributed to the O2 sensor to light up the check engine light. Did the dealer specify what the replaced besides the O2 sensor? You might want to take the car to a independent local mechaninc now that the car is out of warranty for an honest repair.

I went to try and get this car smogged but was unsuccessful because of a "failed OBD system checks" -my question is what is this the Machanic is talking about and how might one go about correcting the problem? What could I check myself or diagnose myself to get this failed device and working functional one? What would I have to buy to correct this issue and about how much would it cost? Thanks for your help. ~Chad~ 15 answers
