every jeep is normally the same. if you hear the motor knockin then its your usual 4.0L. if you line up 100 jeeps with the 4.0L 99 or of 100 will have the knock. look for leaks in the driveshafts, motor, tranny, differential. if you have any questions about it you can call me 765-438-7093.

YES they are awesome trail rigs check wheel bearings and u joints and make sure the engine runs really good

u joints are a very easy $20 fix. it will take about an hour if you have never done it before.

An 86 is not a good year, youll either have the worst engine of all time....the 2.8 or the 4L with renix injection. Either engine is ass. GO for a 92+, you get the HO 4L, just make sure you avoid the Dana 35 rear axle like the plague. You want to get one with a NP231 part time transfer case, a Chry Co 8 1/4 rear axle and the 4L High Output. Make sure you get the automatic tranny if you wanna wheel, the AW4 is an absolutely fantastic transmission.

hey chris you seem to have some knowledge about these. i have limited expierence with jeeps, xj's and such. i have plenty of automotive knowledge though. i have gotten some differing advice and i just don't want to buy something that won't work for what i am trying to do. i would like to have a trail rig to go out with my son. nothing to crazy. at least at 1st i plan on adding parts as i go so i want it to be buildable. thanks for your help. russ
