How did you activate 4-wheel drive in a 1979 Jeep Cherokee? Push button? Lever?

Part time had a lever on the floor to the right of the gear shift. The automatic transmissions have quarda-trac which is always on. -- I used to lock my front hubs in the fall and pulled the stick when I needed 4WD on my part time Cherokee.
