Question type: Maintenance & Repair

a mechanic charged me for 2 hours of time to replace the spark plugs.  This was just part
of an expensive full tune up. My sister thinks the plugs should have taken about 15 - 30
minutes.

THANK YOU! The 2 hours was just the time to replace spark plugs. Plus $71 parts fee for the spark plugs. They also billed 30 mins. to replace serpentine belt, plus $70 for the belt; also another 1 hour for checking all fluid levels and replacing the oil filter, and changing the oil. They also charged $60 for 6 quarts of Mobil 1 oil (which is the oil I requested). $40 for Cabin Air filter, $33 for Air Filter, $12 for Volvo oil filter kit, $9 for brake cylinder degreaser, $3 for wiper solvent. Total parts and labor $668. I was stunned at the price, I was expecting the $350 they had given me as an estimate. Do you think I have the right to contest any of these charges? I greatly appreciate your help.

Thank you for all these information of owners’ experiencing of being ripped off by dealership. I ll do it by myself after I explore thru google and a little talk with an expertise mechanic - my good friend. Thank again for sharing! Happy tune up!

It is actually very simple to do a tune up on a car. It can be done within an hr or 2 . If you dont want to pay 600 + you can always try doing it yourself. Mechanics charger depending on brand as well. I have 2 cars one a honda and second a bmw. Mechanics charged me for a honda 150 and for a bmw 400 . Thats not including parts since i bought them with warranty and didnt have to buy them again. All in all i got tired of paying so much that i do them myself .
