93 VW Passat GLX headlight switch problem

I have a 93 GLX.  The headlight switch contacts appeared to be worn.  When I turn on the lights, the amber lights  illuminate, but the headlights do not.  After several minutes of toggling the switch, eventually the headlights do turn on apparently making sufficient contact to power up.  So, on-line, I ordered a new switch.  When I plugged new unit into the receptacle it emitted a foul odor, and, a few miles later, the unit began to smoke.   I suspected a defective switch.  I then ordered another switch from a different warehouse, and upon plug in---same result: odor, then smoke.  I do not suspect a problem with a blown fuse, because  the original unit, still works, tho, very reluctantly.  Also, there is no odor or smoke with the original unit.

Has anyone had this or similar situations?  Any solutions or ideas?

Thank you.  Bob K.
