Engine cut-off when cold - 1996 Passat 2.0L 115 BHP

I have a problem with my engine: The car will always start but before having reached 90 degress celcious the engine cuts off very suddenly. When in gear I can keep it running but when idling the engine is sure to cut off very promtly. To judge by the smell it's getting plenty off gas so I'm thinking it's an electrical/sensory problem. Any suggestions? The temperature sensor has been checked and found OK.
