Just bought my 1st 2005 XL-7. do these vehicle generaly have a very noisy engine. It seem loud ,especially when you first start it and only quietys down a little bit when you put it in drive

I have the same situation with my 05 XL7, and always wonder why. Does any body have an answer or reason.

Go to your local parts store like Auto Zone that do engine code read text. Sounds like you have worn timing chains the test will show timing issues fir left,right or both banks of the engine if it is the problem..the XL7 has had that problem due to the chain densioner failure..sorry to say if so will be a costly repair upwards of $3000 ..I know I have a 2007 XL 7 mine has a right bank timing issue..
