Can you still buy a OBD code reader for the 81 chevy impala, if so where?

Having trouble locating one especially hand held, my mechanic has one, but it is huge and cost alot of money, I just want one to find out why I have a short in my dome light???

First off, there's no such thing as an OBD code reader for a 1981 Impala.  OBD was not even invented in its original form until 1985 or 1986.  Not sure what your mechanic has but there's no code reader for it.

Second, the OBD reader would not diagnose a short in the dome light -- you'll need a multimeter, continuity tester, etc., to find that.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.
